Curatorial note

A rare flatweave hanbel from the Ait Isaac tribe of the Middle Atlas, woven in rich tobacco-brown and amber with horizontal registers of diamond and lozenge motifs in ivory and sienna. The top and bottom ends transition into broad flatwoven stripe bands — a structural feature unique to the flatweave tradition of the Atlas tribes. Lighter and more transportable than a knotted pile carpet, the hanbel was woven for both daily use and ceremonial occasions. Made entirely from live-sheep wool with natural plant dyes. Vintage and one of a kind.
